For men in China, it seems that there’s a new currency to buy the #iPhone6S – 40 milliliters of #sperm. An advertisement by a sperm bank in China has claimed that those who are eligible to donate 40 ml of sperm and do so will be rewarded with 5,000 yuan ($785), which is almost the price of a brand new iPhone 6S in the Chinese mainland.
The ad has caused some sensation online, and shed fresh light on the sperm donation industry, which is not very well known to people in China. On average, fewer than 100 people successfully donate annually in the bank, which falls far short of demand from couples, the sperm bank says on its website. It, therefore, decided to subsidise donations to the tune of 4,000 to 5,000 yuan starting from 2011 to attract more donors. A China Daily report suggests that sperm banks in China have faced severe shortages in recent years, and in some places, less than 30 percent of the donations meet the standards, according to media reports.
