On Thursday, just one day before the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris, Beirut in Lebanon was subjected to twin blasts that have caused at least 43 deaths and over 200 injuries. But the casualties might have been higher if it weren’t for Adel Termos.
The Beirut local was out with his young daughter in south Beirut’s Burj al-Barajneh when the first suicide bomber detonated his explosives’ vest outside a nearby Shiite mosque. As crowds were gathering outside the mosque, Termos spotted a second bomber, who was approaching the crowds.
In a split-second decision, Termos threw himself at the second bomber. The bomb went off, killing Termos and his daughter. However, his sacrifice saved many lives in the area.
Thursday’s twin blasts in Beirut was also one of the deadliest suicide attacks in the country, and was quickly claimed by the extremist Islamic State group.
