The Rivers state police command has given details on how some suspected kidnappers were arrested in the state.
In a statement by the command spokesperson Ahamad Muhammad 12 suspected kidnappers were arrested by officers of the police force since the beginning of November.
Muhammad re-countered that some police officers acting on a distress call on Tuesday, November 10, chased some kidnappers around Arazona off Peter Odili Road in Port Harcourt.
He said the gunmen had kidnapped a man, Emmanuel Akujobi at about 9 pm using a Volkswagen Golf 3 saloon car.
But the spokesperson said the chase by the police officers made the kidnappers abandon their victim and his vehicle – a Lexus Jeep with registration Number: ABJ 724 BC.
“One of the suspected kidnappers also got fatally wounded during shot out with policemen. This effort has no doubt confirmed that our response time to distress calls has greatly improved,” he said.
He also said that another man, Austin Kalu, 28 was kidnapped and safely rescued by the police on Saturday, November 13 at Ogbakiri forest.

Muhammad said: “One of the suspected kidnappers named Emenike Sunday was arrested and a locally made short gun and five live cartridges were recovered at the scene.”
He said the police effort in fighting crime in the state is yielding significant results.
“This can be predicated in our sustained and improved response time to distress calls. While being mindful of your respective media time and space, its pertinent to highlight some of the breakthroughs the command recorded within the period under review,” Muhammad said.

Similarly, Muhammad said some police officers on patrol along Ada George road in Port Harcourt sighted a suspicious black Honda Civic with registration No. AHD 145 RX.
He said the vehicle with its three occupants opened fire on the police officers who tried to approach them..
“Three of them got fatally wounded after a gun duel with the policemen while one AK 47 rifle, two magazines, 50 rounds of 7.62 live ammunition, a complete set of police uniform and a police bullet proof vest were recovered.

Also, the command arrested a gang of armed robbers specialized in trailing and robbing bank customers who either use the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) or the banking hall.
“The duo of Hycinth Apasu and Akelachi Nwobike were on November 6 were arrested at their hideout at Emekuku, Port Harcourt and have confessed to be the gang that terrorizes bank customers around Azikwe and Olu-Obasanjo axis of Port Harcourt,” he said.
He added that 21 suspected cultists, 12 kidnappers, 30 armed robbers were arrested from various areas across the state while 11 kidnap victims were rescued over the month.
Also, three vehicle and many weapons were recovered from the groups.
