Former president Goodluck Jonathan, who has recently become a global icon, rounded off his two-week visit to the USA with a meeting with students of the Howard University School of Political Science.
According to Linda Ikeji blog, Jonathan and US congresswoman Karen Bass, who is the ranking member on the Sub-committee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights, were the special guests at the university event entitled “Elections And Constitutions In Africa: A Timely Issue”.

In his speech, the ex-president addressed future leaders and encouraged then to embrace civil education. He stressed that such knowledge would help to sustain democracies and equip youths with necessary tools to become responsible citizens.
Speaking about various aspects of leadership, Jonathan further expressed gratitude for the opportunity to speak at the same Howard University where Nigeria’s first president, Nnamdi Azikiwe, studied.
The ex-president described Africa as the “bright continent”, stressing that stability and good governance are key factors for peace and development on the continent.

Earlier this week, Jonathan took part in the event named “Presidential elections and democratic consolidation in Africa: Case studies on Nigeria and Tanzania.”
In his speech, the former Nigerian leader said that “democracy is being institutionalized in Africa” at a step which guarantees that the continent would be rid of ongoing electoral problems within the next months.
