On Tuesday the Lagos State Government stated it had built over 10,000 housing units as parts of efforts to tackle housing deficit in the state.
Bosun Jeje, the Commissioner for Housing,at a press briefing in Ikeja, announced the number represented the houses that the state government had constructed since the inception of the Governor Babatunde Fashola-led administration in 2007.
He noted that the administration had been determined to reduce housing deficit in the state, adding that the houses had been handed over to the residents of the state through several strategies.
Jeje said: “One of the strategies is the Lagos Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme, popularly called Lagos HOMS. By this month, we will start the Rent-To-Own home ownership scheme.”
The commissioner said although the number of houses produced had not drastically reduced the state’s housing deficit, which the Federal Bureau of Statistics put at one million, the government had contributed its part to reducing the deficit despite the limited resources at its disposal.
According to him: “The government is expected to create conducive atmosphere that will allow private investors to thrive in the housing sector. But the government also took it upon itself to commence the Lagos HOMS. After the private sector realised the effort of the state government, they have come to partner the government. In respect of this, we have created the PPP office to facilitate it.”
